Edwardian precincts and the gutter challenge
Northcote's heritage precincts — particularly the streets around High Street and the approaches to Darebin Parklands — include substantial Edwardian weatherboard housing with distinctive double-fronted elevations and steeply pitched roofs. These homes share the same ridge pointing fatigue as the rest of Melbourne's inner north, but they add a specific gutter challenge: the mature elm and plane tree streets of Northcote and Thornbury generate leaf falls that fill gutters in days during autumn and regularly in spring. Gutters on these homes overflow, driving water into the fascia board junction and along the rafter tails. Thornbury's stock, slightly newer and more mixed, includes a higher proportion of 1930s–50s cement-tile homes where the same pattern plays out with additional concrete-tile maintenance considerations.
